We've been talking about wrist angles a lot. Some of the feedback has been that you guys need more drills. So here we are doing more drills
Learning a perfect impact position has two parts to it. Number one, what do your arms and hands look like? Second, what does your body look like? Let’s start with what do your arms and hands look like.
To get started, I’ll take a normal set up without a club. I put my iPhone in my left hand or my lead hand and I'm putting the edge of the phone right about where my fingers meet the meat in my hand. I hold it where there's a little bit of space between the phone and my left forearm. I take my left arm or lead arm back to the point where it's even with my right thigh. There's still a little space here between the phone and my forearm. From here, I’m looking to learn how to create lead wrist flexion or bowing. I'm going to go through to my left leg and by the time I get my hand past my left leg, the phone is touching my forearm. What that's going to turn into is going to be shaft lean at impact and solidness of contact.
Now, most of you still need to learn to close the club face. We do that through supination and will use the iPhone again. So, I'm back to my right thigh, and I'm going to do the same movement. But now I’m going to add forearm supination or rotation. When I did this move the first time, the screen of my phone was still pointing behind me. When I do it the second time, the screen is pointed more or less in front of me (at the camera.) If I did that with a club, the back of my hand and clubface will be pointed basically straight behind me to the left.
Before I hit balls, I want to start to add a little bit of turn. I’m going to do the same moves with my iPhone, and now I'm going to feel my left hip, my left shoulder and the left side of my body start to turn with that.
From here, I would do is 3-5 reps with my phone just to gain a feel. Then I'll try and replicate the same feels with a club, doing 3-5 rehearsals and then one hit.
The last part of this is feeling that my right side turns through and I get all the way into a finish position. I want my knees, hips and body turned all the way towards the target. So, by the time I get done, I still have my wrist conditions and forearm rotation. I've still turned, but now I'm all the way on my lead foot and I'm fully turned. Then I would hit a series of shots with that same piece.
Gradually you can those same feels into your full swing.
