An increase in overall body rotation means better ball striking. Those who rotate more hit the ball better that those who rotate less.
If you want to rotate, you’ve got to move your body in a certain way to enable you to rotate. Usually, people who a don't rotate well have too much lateral motion.
I'm assuming that most of you have an office chair at work or certainly you live in a house that has a chair that you can use, so we’re going to start the drill with a chair.
I take my normal setup and the outer edge of my foot is going to be basically at the edge of the chair. There's about a fist-width space between my left thigh and the chair. If I go up to the top and I want to rotate, I don't want to get my hip to get to the chair. What I do want is to get my knee to the chair while my hip stays inside of it.
From the top, I want my left knee to have some form of external rotation. I want to have a little bit of increase in the bend of the knee and I want the knee to hit the chair while I still have space with my hip. From there I'm going to continue turning and extend up through.
I want you guys to get your left side rotating and not sliding. You want to increase the bend in your leg and your left leg to rotate around so your quad or your knee cap will go from facing forward to facing towards the target.
Another way to learn the downswing rotation for those of you who may not have a chair is to use a wall. For this, I take my normal set up and I put the middle toes on my left foot against the wall. I probably have a fist distance between my left knee and the wall, and I probably have a fist and a half between my hip and the wall because I like to have a little bit of foot flare.
I'm going to go no club here just to start to get a feel. I make a little bit of a backswing turn and then I'm trying to get my knee to hit the wall while my hip stays inside of it. You're retaining that feel. What does that feel like to get that left knee to the wall and turning?
Now there are two key things that may prevent you from being able to do this.
Number one is when you try to get the left knee around and increase the flex, you leave your pelvis back too far and never learn how to extend up out of it and get to a finish. You have to eventually learn to do this and still push off your right side and extend your pelvis up.
The second thing here that can mess this up is if you push too soon. You need to push at the right time from the top. If I push off my right foot right away, it's really hard to have time to bend and externally rotate my left leg. I want to turn with a little bit of shift and then push more late. That's the key to rotate really well.
