So when I say slide, what I’m talking about is from the top of the backswing, the hips moving too far linear or lateral towards the target. So too much slide, too much lower body motion to the left. Typically too much slide is a better player, more advanced player problem, but it is a problem.
If you're sliding your left shoulder probably is going up right away and my hip goes forward and tilts my spine to the right. Then I can't rotate.
So, how do we start to fix this deal? Well, I have three drills that I typically would use. These drills are designed for feedback so you know whether your are doing them right or not.
Drill 1: I set up an alignment rod in the ground. If I were to take my normal setup, I like to set the stick up where it's just in front of my left leg, so I give myself about two inches there and I try and get the height of the stick just below my knee when I go from the top. I'm trying to feel from the top of my swing, like I'm essentially getting my left hip out of the way before it were to hit that stick.
Drill 2: This one is just a slight variation. I would do the same thing, stick in front of me to the left. But this time I'm going to have it a little higher - maybe just underneath my pocket, below my hip. I'm somewhere in the middle of my thigh above my knee, but below my hip doesn't have to be a perfect height, but I'm looking for something about in that height. I'm going to try and feel the same pieces here. We have another video out on lower body feels you guys can check out that goes more into detail about the feels you can have, ( https://youtu.be/symVln6qx1M) but this is meant just for drill perspective. So combine your feels with the drill.
Drill 3: We did a video on this earlier in the year called THE BEST ROTATION DRILL I’VE EVER SEEN ( https://youtu.be/lQlgyLPAi2I). It’s a drill that I saw from George Gangas. I use a bunch of his drills because he has really good drills!
The first two drills were more specifically to not hit the stick to get ride of the slide. This drill is more of about getting rid of a shift or too much slide by adding rotation. So, in this one I'm going to try and hit the stick on purpose, which is to add the rotation.
I put one stick through my belt loops, and I put another stick in the ground in front about 45 degrees to the left of me. By the time I get to impact, I want to have the stick through my belt loops touching the stick in the ground. The goal here is to be getting my hips open, about 45 degrees by the time I get to impact. So I'm going to go from the top of my swing to try and feel like I get that lead hip a little lower and opening and rotating more compared to norm. I want to hit this stick in front of me by the time I get to impact.
