A sway in your backswing can lead to contact and direction issues. If I were to make a motion where I shift my hips and my body too far to the right – I move the center mass of my body and lower portion too far too the right – I have to do a lot to get back to impact from there. A lot of times a sway can lead to a steep downswing and over-the-top motion.
Now, the first thing you need to understand about the sway motion is that the sway and hip turn are sort of equal and opposite of two different pieces. Meaning, every person I see who sways to the right or shifts to the right has essentially no turn of their lower body. Conversely, every golfer I see who has a good amount of hip turn to the right never sways all that much. If you're someone who struggles with a sway, watch that motion.
When I sway or slide, my right hip goes to the right, my belt buckle essentially just stays straight towards the target. There’s no hip turn which then presets a pretty vertical backswing motion and a steep downswing motion.
If you're going to fix the sway you have to understand that for every inch you don't want to go to the right, you need to add a inch of hip turn. You need to feel like you turn your hips a lot more than normal. How much should you turn the hips in the backswing? We all use this sort of the old adage of the hips turn 45 degrees.
I have three variations of the same drill I use to fix a sway or a slide in the golf swing.
For the first drill, I put an alignment rod in the ground angled at about 45 degrees and positioned just behind my right hip. I want the stick at a height where the top part of the stick is roughly in line with my hip or pocket or upper part of thigh. I’ll put it at a distance from my leg where it’s just not quite touching my leg.
The goal here is for you to learn to turn back to the top without bumping into the stick. If you go to the top with a sway motion, you will hit the stick.
For drill number two, I replace the stick with a chair or an object that essentially serves the same purpose as the stick. Any object that will be in your way will be fine. And with drill number three, we use a golf bag to serve the same purpose.
Some of you in an effort to turn and not sway to the right are going to over-exaggerate. You're going to try and turn your hips a lot and your hips are going to move too far towards the target and there will be too much weight or pressure on the left foot at the top. The goal here when I go to the top, as I turn slightly is I still have the majority of my pressure on the inside part of my right foot. That's a key point here. There's still more pressure on my right foot than my left while I turn inside of the stick.
I say all the time, you get very little return on investment when you do drills without a golf ball, it is appropriate in the beginning parts of learning for you to create a feel, especially if it's exaggerated and different than normal. But, you need to get a golf ball in there sooner rather than later.
