We’ve posted a bunch of videos on wrist angles, but I think a lot of people are still not clear on exactly how your wrists and arms and hands should work in the golf swing.
When I’m at a normal delivery position during my downswing, I have my hands even with the ball or even slightly ahead of the ball. I’ll preset my hands in a position where they will be at impact. At this point, I have some hinge to my wrist, my left wrist is slightly flat, the club head is behind me and my right wrist is bent back.
From here, there are three things you must do to not only get to the golf ball, but to compress and pure your irons.
First, you must unhinge your wrist. That’s how the club gets from up in the air down towards the ground. When you get to impact, your wrists are hinged down.
Next, you need your left wrist to be flat or slightly bowed. When you do that, it will tilt the club face down towards the ground. This will keep the club face from opening and adding loft (not good!).
Finally, you must add arm rotation or supination. From the time your left hand is even with your right thigh to impact your left hand should turn from front to all the way at the target.
You MUST do all three of these things to compress and pure your irons. You must unhinge your wrist, (not negotiable!) your wrist must be flat or bowed and you must supinate – or turn the back of your left hand towards/at the target at and through impact.
How much should you do each of these things? You do these things as much as you need to get to the proper impact position.
If you have an issue with casting, you can offset that with wrist flexion.
The idea that you can make a golf swing and not think about your hands is baloney. If you're elite level and you can play and that all happens by itself, then obviously you don't have to think about your wrists and hands. But, if you're watching this video and you're not elite and you don't pure all of your irons, you need to know about those three things. You need to know which you personally do and which you don't do and you need to understand how to fix them.
