When I say shaft lean, I’m talking about how - at the moment of impact - all good ball strikers have the shaft leaning towards the target.
Why do we want the shaft to lean forward? When the shaft leans forward, there are really two key elements. Number one is dynamic loft. So if I look at my eight iron, and I just set it down flat, there is a certain loft on it. When I lean the handle forward, there's less loft on it. Why does your eight iron go shorter than your seven iron or why does your seven iron go farther than your eight iron? Your seven iron goes farther primarily because the club has less loft. Lean helps you hit the ball farther because it takes loft off.
The secondary goal is going to be low point. Having my shaft leaning forward lends itself well to hitting the ball first, ground second. When the shaft is leaning forward, you’ll hit the ball better and farther. Everyone wants that.
There are three ways of getting more shaft lean I want to focus on. The first is arm abduction, which just means during the down swing, my left arm is supposed to fly off of my chest. The more my arm works away from my body, the more the handle goes forward.
A good drill for this is to put a glove or tee under my left armpit. I start with my arm on my chest and into my follow through I want my left arm to come off my chest. The glove goes from underneath my armpit and drops to the ground as I do this.
The second key to getting more shaft lean is wrist conditions. Bowing your left wrist – or pushing your hand towards the target – will lean the shaft forward. You can practice this using a hanger like I’ve demonstrated in many of our other videos. When I do this, I feel the back of my hand pushing towards the target to put some stress on that shaft and my left arm moving forward. I'm not trying to take my hands and shove them down and forward. I'm trying to let my left arm go off my chest and my hands are going up and left.
The final key is body rotation. If I stand at set up and put my hands on the club and just turn my body and do nothing with my arms and hands the shaft will lean forward. So, I’m going to do the first two pieces and add turn.
Those are the main pieces of getting shaft lean. Putting those all together would be great. Those are the things that the best players are doing and that's what you need to do to compress the golf ball.
